Charlotte Marion
When asked where she’s from, Charlotte Marion prefers her daughter’s answer: Earth. Born in Texas, Charlotte’s life and art have been shaped by movement. She and her husband began their life together in New York before spending seven years traveling full-time in an RV with their two children. Eventually, their adventures led them to the mountains of Tennessee, where they put down roots and Charlotte found something she hadn’t had in years: a place to create and grow. Travel has always fed Charlotte’s creativity. New landscapes, changing surroundings, and the experiences collected along the way continue to find their way into her work. But a life built around exploration has also reinforced something she learned about herself as an artist a long time ago: She does not have one medium. She can’t choose. And she no longer feels the need to. Oil, acrylic, watercolor, drawing, and other materials each offer something different. Some ideas need texture and weight; others need softness, transparency, or simplicity. Rather than defining herself by a particular medium, Charlotte chooses the materials that best fit the piece, the subject, and sometimes simply the mood she is in when she begins. Her work is an extension of a life spent exploring—places, materials, techniques, and whatever happens to capture her attention next. Today, Charlotte creates from Tennessee, surrounded by the landscapes that finally convinced a family of lifelong travelers to stay awhile.
